PM Shehbaz Sharif receives initial PIMS incident report

ISLAMABAD: An initial investigation report into the PIMS incident has been submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the inquiry committee identifying the causes of the tragedy and recommending action against those found responsible, sources said.

According to sources, former interior secretary Shahid Khan, who headed the inquiry committee, submitted the report late at night to the office of Prime Minister’s Adviser Tauqir Shah.

Tauqir Shah subsequently forwarded the report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and briefed him on its key findings and recommendations, sources added.

Sources within the inquiry committee also confirmed that the report had reached the Prime Minister’s Office. The committee has signed the report, and the prime minister now has the authority to decide whether to make its findings public.

The report examines the circumstances that led to the PIMS incident and identifies the factors and individuals allegedly responsible for the tragedy. It also highlights several difficulties faced by rescue teams while responding to the emergency.

The inquiry committee has specifically recommended action against relevant PIMS staff members who remained absent from duty at the time of the incident. It has also proposed a series of measures aimed at preventing similar incidents and improving emergency preparedness at the hospital.

As part of its investigation, the committee interviewed PIMS administration officials and doctors. Statements from fire brigade personnel and rescue teams have also been incorporated into the report to provide a detailed account of the emergency response.

The report raises concerns about the quality of treatment and medical facilities available at PIMS. According to sources, the committee observed that the hospital’s facilities and emergency arrangements do not meet international standards.

The inquiry committee has urged the prime minister to take immediate action against those responsible for the incident. It has also recommended improvements in hospital management, emergency response mechanisms, staff availability and medical facilities to ensure better preparedness for future emergencies.

The prime minister is expected to review the findings and recommendations before deciding on further action, including whether to release the report publicly.
