President Zardari, PM Shehbaz pledge major maritime safety push

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to improving maritime safety, security and regulatory oversight in line with international obligations.

In separate messages issued on World Maritime Day, both leaders paid tribute to the country’s seafarers and maritime professionals for their contribution to Pakistan’s economy and international trade.

President Zardari highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure. He said the installation of a modern Vessel Traffic Management System at Port Qasim would improve navigation safety, vessel monitoring, maritime security and operational efficiency.

The president also praised Pakistani seafarers and maritime personnel for continuing to perform their duties under challenging circumstances amid the current regional tensions. He said their dedication had once again brought pride to the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif noted that World Maritime Day is being observed this year under the theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.”

He said Pakistan was taking coordinated steps to strengthen its maritime sector, particularly by aligning the country’s maritime industry with international standards and implementing relevant conventions of the International Maritime Organization.

The prime minister said Pakistan, as a responsible maritime nation, remained focused on enhancing maritime safety and security, protecting the marine environment and developing professional capabilities.

He said these measures were aimed at building a modern, resilient and globally competitive maritime sector capable of meeting international standards and supporting the country’s economic and trade interests.
