LAHORE: The Punjab government has intensified its road safety campaign by introducing stricter penalties for motorcyclists who fail to wear helmets, including the temporary impoundment of motorcycles for one day.

Under the revised enforcement measures, helmet use has been made compulsory across the province. Riders found violating the rule will face fines, while their motorcycles may also be seized for 24 hours as part of the crackdown aimed at improving road safety.

Officials said the province-wide campaign is focused on ensuring full compliance with traffic regulations and reducing the number of road accidents. Authorities are also continuing action against motorists who violate lane discipline.

According to traffic officials, more than 20,000 motorcycles were impounded last month for lane discipline violations, reflecting the government’s broader efforts to improve traffic management and public safety.

In a parallel initiative, Punjab has rolled out a digital challan system to make traffic law enforcement more transparent and efficient. The new system allows traffic wardens to issue e-challans through a mobile application, with photo and video evidence recorded at the scene and attached to each violation.

DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir said motorists will receive an SMS notification from 8070 containing details of the fine along with a link to view the photographic and video evidence related to the violation.

Officials said the digital enforcement system is designed to enhance transparency, strengthen accountability, and build greater public confidence in traffic policing across Punjab.
