Adviser to Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said the federal government and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are holding off-the-record consultations over the party’s planned October 4 protest.
Speaking on Thursday, Sanaullah said discussions were underway with senior PTI leaders regarding the proposed march. He said the final decision rested with the party leadership, but the government had already prepared measures to prevent protesters from entering Islamabad if the demonstration went ahead.
Sanaullah said the government would enforce the law and would not allow activities that disrupt public life or block roads in the federal capital. He also criticised the proposed participation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, describing the planned move towards Islamabad as an attempt by a provincial administration to challenge the federal government.
The adviser also confirmed that imposing governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained an option under consideration. He said the federal government was consulting its coalition partners on the matter and that any such step would require parliamentary approval.
Sanaullah accused the KP government of failing to focus adequately on development, counterterrorism and public welfare. He alleged that the provincial leadership had instead concentrated on organising a march to Islamabad to demand the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
He said the Centre could consider constitutional measures, including emergency rule or governor’s rule, if the provincial government continued what he described as unlawful activities.
The PTI has announced the October 4 march as part of its nationwide campaign seeking Imran Khan’s release. The protest was initially scheduled for September 27 but was later postponed.
The federal government has maintained that it will not permit road blockades or disruption of routine activities. Authorities have already introduced enhanced security arrangements and restrictions on routes leading towards Islamabad and the adjoining areas.
The political standoff has also intensified speculation about possible federal action against the KP government, with government officials indicating that emergency measures or governor’s rule could be considered if the planned march proceeds.
