Former Pakistan fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has claimed that he received death threats on several occasions after speaking publicly against gambling and betting in cricket.
Speaking to Geo News in London, Nawaz said he had also presented evidence related to alleged betting and gambling activities to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
The former cricketer said he plans to discuss gambling and betting in greater detail in his upcoming book. According to Nawaz the book will aim to raise public awareness about the issue and his concerns regarding alleged corruption in sports.
Nawaz also spoke about his longstanding stance against what he described as elements involved in alleged wrongdoing within sports. He said he had continued to speak out despite standing alone against individuals whom he accused of pursuing their own interests while influencing the sporting system.
The 78-year-old former fast bowler represented Pakistan in 55 Test matches taking 177 wickets. His best Test bowling figures were an impressive 9 wickets for 86 runs.
In One-Day Internationals Nawaz played 45 matches for Pakistan and claimed 63 wickets. His best ODI bowling figures were 4 for 27.
Nawaz’s latest comments have once again brought attention to the issue of betting and gambling in cricket an area that has historically been a concern for cricket authorities and law-enforcement agencies.
However, the allegations and claims regarding threats and betting-related activities remain statements attributed to Nawaz unless independently established by relevant authorities or courts.
