Saudi envoy Dr. Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami arrives in Islamabad

Dr. Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami, the newly appointed Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, has officially assumed his duties in Islamabad

Dr. Rajeh bin Tami Al-Baqami, the newly appointed Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, has officially assumed his duties in Islamabad on Saturday. His appointment was announced in July 2026, succeeding the long-serving ambassador Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki.

Before his diplomatic appointment, Dr. Al-Baqami had a distinguished career in the Saudi military and academia. He is a retired Major General with a long career in the Saudi armed forces.

After retiring from the military, he joined the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the rank of ambassador. He is regarded as an experienced diplomat and has previously held key assignments in several countries.

He holds a doctorate in Human Resource Management from Brunel University London.

He hails from the Al-Baqami tribe, a lineage known for its resilience and strength.

Dr. Al-Baqami’s appointment is generally seen as a significant development in Pakistan-Saudi defense diplomacy. His military background, combined with his diplomatic experience, positions him uniquely for this role. Notably, he is the second consecutive Saudi ambassador to Pakistan with a military background, highlighting the strategic nature of the relationship.

Other than Pakistan, Saudi Arabi has an envoy with military background in Iraq. On the other hand, Pakistan has over one-fifth of its envoys from military background.

Saif Nasser, the Saudi press attache, is also a PhD in digital communication. Experts believe that the new envoy and his team will not be boxed in by defense and security pundits and will think about business, trade and soft power independently and in the interest of their country.
