Section 144 imposed in Islamabad for two months

The Islamabad district administration has imposed Section 144 in the federal capital for two months, placing restrictions on public gatherings, rallies, processions and demonstrations.

The order was issued by Additional District Magistrate Dr Anam Fatima on September 18 and came into force with immediate effect. Under the notification, gatherings of five or more people are prohibited at public places across the Islamabad district, including the Red Zone.

The administration said the restrictions were imposed amid concerns over planned political and public gatherings in the capital. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a long march towards Islamabad on September 27, while the Kissan Ittehad has also announced plans for a protest and sit-in.

The PTI has said its September 27 march is aimed at demanding the release of its founder, Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The development has prompted authorities to strengthen security arrangements in Islamabad and surrounding areas.

According to the district administration, gatherings and assemblies of any kind are currently not permitted in the capital. Officials warned that violations would result in legal action under the relevant laws. The administration also urged citizens to avoid unlawful activities and cooperate with security agencies.

Authorities said planned rallies and processions could affect public order and pose risks to the safety of citizens and public property. The administration maintained that preventive measures were necessary to protect lives and property and maintain law and order.

Security preparations have also been stepped up in Rawalpindi and other areas surrounding Islamabad ahead of the expected protests. Major routes connecting the federal capital with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have also faced restrictions as part of the security measures.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5. The restrictions include a ban on gatherings of five or more people in public places, roads and open spaces.

The Punjab government has also sought the deployment of Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali from September 22 to October 5 to assist police with security arrangements.
