Security forces have killed 18 terrorists in separate operations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to state media citing security sources.
Thirteen militants were killed during an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan, while five others were eliminated in an operation in Mastung, Balochistan.
The operation in North Waziristan targeted members of Fitna al-Khawarij, the state’s term for militants affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. Security forces reportedly targeted militant hideouts after monitoring their movements in the area.
Five militants described by the state as members of Fitna al-Hindustan were killed in Mastung. Security forces also recovered heavy weapons and ammunition from the site. Search and clearance operations were continuing in the area.
President Asif Ali Zardari praised the security forces for the operations and commended their courage and professional capabilities. He said the actions demonstrated the state’s determination to confront militant groups and prevent their alleged foreign-backed activities.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also praised the security personnel involved in the North Waziristan operation. He said the campaign against militant groups would continue until terrorism was eliminated and lasting peace was established.
The prime minister said ongoing counterterrorism operations under the Azm-e-Istehkam framework reflected the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s security.
Meanwhile, police foiled an attack on the Shadipur police post in Kohat. District Police Officer Rai Mazhar Iqbal said officers launched a strong response after militants attacked the post.
Four police personnel were injured during the exchange of fire and were taken to hospital. Hospital officials said their condition was stable and they were out of danger.
Police subsequently launched a search operation to track down the attackers. Security was also increased across Kohat following the incident.
The latest operations come amid a rise in militant attacks across Pakistan in recent months. K-P and Balochistan have remained among the most affected regions.
Last week, a blast targeting a security checkpoint near Aman Mela in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan killed 12 people and injured 35 others. The banned TTP claimed responsibility for the attack.
A separate bombing at a mosque in Kohat’s Police Lines in September killed more than 20 people, including police personnel and civilians. Security forces later carried out a clearance operation in the area.
Security forces have also reported several clashes with militants in Hangu, Balochistan and other areas in recent weeks, with casualties recorded on both sides.
