Seven policemen were injured when terrorists attacked a police checkpost in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, early Wednesday.
Police officials said the attack was repulsed and the situation was brought under control. The injured personnel were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to police sources, the attackers targeted the checkpost with a hand grenade. The facility is located within the jurisdiction of the Gombat police station.
The injured officers were reported to be in stable condition. Officials said there was no immediate threat to their lives.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government strongly condemned the attack. Provincial Information Minister Shafi Jan described the incident as a cowardly act.
He expressed solidarity with the injured policemen and prayed for their early recovery. He also said such attacks would not prevent the government from continuing its efforts against terrorism.
Jan said the provincial government had been working to strengthen the capacity of the KP police and Counter Terrorism Department. He said security personnel were being provided with modern weapons, equipment and technology.
He added that efforts to counter terrorism would continue across the province.
The attack comes amid a renewed rise in violence in Pakistan, particularly in KP and Balochistan.
A recent security report recorded a significant increase in violence-related deaths across the country during the third quarter of 2026. The rise followed declines recorded during the first two quarters of the year.
KP and Balochistan remained the most affected regions. Together, the two provinces accounted for the overwhelming majority of violence-related fatalities during the period.
Balochistan recorded 829 deaths, while KP reported 556 fatalities, according to the report.
The latest incident follows several deadly attacks in KP in recent weeks.
A day earlier, four Federal Board of Revenue officials were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen. In a separate incident in Dera Ismail Khan, a highway traffic police vehicle came under attack, leaving one police official dead and another injured.
On September 27, a suicide attack in Dera Ismail Khan killed 14 people, including two rescue personnel. Another 35 people were injured after an explosives-laden vehicle targeted a police checkpost and an ambulance carrying victims.
Earlier, on September 18, a major attack at the old Police Lines in Kohat left 23 people dead and around 100 others injured. Security forces later conducted a clearance operation and killed eight terrorists.
