Senate sub-committee to probe theft allegations, administrative crisis at Pakistan steel mills today

A three-member Sub-Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production will visit Pakistan Steel Mills

ISLAMABAD: A three-member Sub-Committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production will visit Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) in Karachi today, September 7, 2026, to investigate allegations of theft, security lapses, and the ongoing operational and administrative crisis at the country’s largest industrial complex.

Led by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan, the three-member committee will inspect PSM facilities in Karachi and review the administrative challenges, operational issues, and difficulties being faced by the mill and its employees.

According to an official notification issued by the Senate Secretariat on September 4, 2026, the committee meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Pakistan Steel Mills office in Karachi. The visit has been scheduled to examine incidents of theft and assess the administrative and operational issues affecting the organisation.

The official agenda of the sub-committee states that it will “examine the incidents of theft and the operational and administrative issues being faced by the employees of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).”

Three-Member Panel to Conduct Inspection

The sub-committee will be headed by Senator Syed Masroor Ahsan as Convener, while Senator Khalida Ateeb and Senator Danesh Kumar will serve as members of the panel.

The Minister for Industries and Production has also been included in the committee as an Ex-Officio Member.

The official notice regarding the visit was signed by Muhammad Abubakar Siddique, Secretary Committee, Senate of Pakistan.

Federal, Sindh Authorities Directed to Facilitate Visit

The Senate Secretariat has forwarded copies of the notification to relevant federal and provincial authorities, directing them to ensure necessary arrangements for the committee’s visit.

The Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production has been asked to attend the meeting along with all concerned officials and coordinate arrangements for the Karachi visit. The Chief Executive Officer of Pakistan Steel Mills has also been directed to facilitate the committee during its inspection.

The Chief Secretary Sindh, Home Secretary Sindh, and Secretary Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) Sindh have been requested to provide protocol, transportation, and security arrangements for the visiting members.

The Inspector General of Police Sindh has also been directed to arrange police escort for the committee members during their stay in Karachi and at the venue. The escort officer has been instructed to coordinate with Khurram Shahzad, Dealing Assistant of the Senate Committee.

Meanwhile, the Secretary Health, Government of Sindh has been requested to ensure medical arrangements at the members’ place of stay and the meeting venue.

PSM Faces Years-Long Operational Crisis

Pakistan Steel Mills, once regarded as a major symbol of Pakistan’s industrial development, has remained closed for years due to financial losses, management challenges, and operational difficulties. The shutdown has affected thousands of employees who continue to face uncertainty regarding salaries, employment status, and the future of the organisation.

Workers’ representatives and stakeholders have repeatedly called for the revival of the mill through effective management reforms, utilisation of local expertise, and resolution of issues faced by employees and residents of nearby communities, including Steel Town and Gulshan-e-Hadeed.

The Senate panel’s visit marks a significant parliamentary effort to review the situation inside Pakistan Steel Mills. The committee is expected to examine security failures, alleged theft incidents, administrative shortcomings, and possible measures for addressing the long-standing crisis surrounding the country’s largest steel manufacturing facility.
