Torrential rain floods Nagoya, disrupts Asian Games venues

Japan’s Nagoya city has been hit by record-breaking torrential rain, with 105 millimetres of rainfall recorded within a single hour, causing widespread flooding and severely disrupting daily life.

The intense downpour overwhelmed drainage systems, causing sewers to overflow and turning roads into waterlogged stretches. Floodwater also entered buildings, metro stations and shopping malls in several parts of the city.

Authorities issued a flood warning as the heavy rain caused significant disruption across Nagoya. Further rainfall is expected, raising concerns that flooding could worsen if the downpour continues.

The extreme weather has also affected some venues scheduled to host events during the upcoming Asian Games, which are due to begin in Nagoya on September 19. Water entered certain competition venues amid the flooding.

However, there have been no reports of injuries among athletes or staff members. Officials said everyone affected at the venues was safely evacuated.

The flooding has raised concerns ahead of the major sporting event, which is scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4. Nagoya Mayor Hideaki Ota, however, said the Asian Games would proceed according to schedule despite the severe weather.

The city administration is continuing to monitor the situation as further rain remains possible. Authorities are expected to take precautionary measures to protect athletes, staff and spectators and ensure the affected venues are ready for the Games.

The Asian Games will bring athletes from across Asia to Nagoya and the surrounding Aichi region for competitions in multiple sports. With the event approaching, officials are closely monitoring weather and infrastructure conditions to minimise any disruption caused by the extreme rainfall.
