Trinetra Haldar chooses voice surgery after repeated misgendering

Indian transgender actor, doctor and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju has revealed that she has decided to undergo voice feminization surgery in an effort to avoid being repeatedly misgendered and to feel safer in everyday life.

In a heartfelt social media post, Trinetra explained that the decision was not driven by beauty standards or public image, but by the emotional burden of constantly being addressed with the wrong gender and the fear that often accompanies those experiences.

Recalling a painful incident from 2018, she said she was answering a phone call inside a women’s restroom when a security guard repeatedly addressed her as “sir.” The encounter left her feeling frightened, anxious and deeply uncomfortable, highlighting the challenges many transgender people continue to face in public spaces.

Trinetra shared that, over the years, she has gradually learned to accept her naturally deep voice and even appreciate its uniqueness. However, she admitted that the repeated questioning of her identity, constant scrutiny and frequent misgendering have taken a significant emotional toll.

According to her, living as a transgender woman often means making difficult and expensive choices simply to feel safe and accepted. She noted that many gender-affirming procedures come with extremely high costs, placing them out of reach for many people despite their importance.

She said facial feminization surgery can cost more than ₹4 million, while voice feminization surgery may exceed ₹1 million. Despite the financial burden, many transgender individuals choose these procedures not for cosmetic reasons but because they believe the changes can help them move through society with greater confidence and security.

Trinetra explained that she wants to be able to answer a phone call in a women’s restroom without fearing confrontation, speak freely while trying on clothes in stores without feeling anxious, and enjoy singing again without worrying about how her voice will be perceived.

She also expressed a desire to feel more comfortable in close personal relationships, saying that concerns about her voice have often made her self-conscious and limited her ability to express herself naturally.

In her message, Trinetra said she hopes to leave behind the daily experience of being called “sir,” dealing with suspicious looks from delivery workers and taxi drivers, and constantly feeling the need to explain or prove her identity to strangers.

Her statement has drawn attention to the everyday realities faced by many transgender people, emphasizing that gender-affirming healthcare is often linked not only to personal expression but also to safety, dignity and mental well-being.

Trinetra previously underwent facial feminization surgery in 2024 as part of her gender-affirming journey. Her latest announcement has sparked conversations online about the emotional, social and financial challenges transgender individuals continue to face while seeking acceptance and living authentically.
