WASHINGTON: Support among Americans for the US military campaign against Iran has dropped further, while President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains at a record low, according to a new national poll.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey found that only 31% of Americans support US military action against Iran. The figure has declined from 37% in March and 34% earlier this month.

The latest decline was particularly visible among Republican voters. About 69% of Republicans said they support the military action, compared with 77% in the March survey.

Trump’s overall approval rating also remained weak. For the second consecutive poll, only 33% of respondents approved of his performance as president. The figure represents the lowest approval level recorded for Trump in Reuters/Ipsos polling across his first and second terms.

The conflict has become an increasingly difficult issue for the administration. Trump has argued that military action is necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. However, the prolonged conflict has raised concerns among Americans over its economic and political costs.

Public expectations about the duration of the war have also changed. Around 83% of respondents believe the conflict will continue for an extended period, compared with 80% earlier this month.

The economic impact is adding to pressure on the Trump administration. US gasoline prices have risen significantly since the conflict began, with prices now more than a dollar per gallon higher than before the war.

Trump had campaigned on promises to tackle inflation and avoid prolonged military engagements. Rising fuel costs and the continuing conflict could therefore become important political issues ahead of the November midterm elections.

The administration has also signalled plans to increase economic pressure on Tehran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently indicated that sanctions could be expanded against countries conducting business with Iran, although no new penalties were immediately imposed.

The poll also highlighted a political challenge for Republicans. Among independent voters, 33% said they would support Democratic candidates in congressional elections, compared with 19% who favoured Republicans if elections were held at the time of the survey.

The poll was conducted among 1,215 US adults nationwide and carries a margin of error of about three percentage points.
