WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump confirmed that he planned to have dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday, while reaffirming his opposition to slowing the pace of artificial intelligence development.
Trump also reiterated his belief that new regulations could allow China to overtake the United States in AI development. Although he acknowledged Amodei’s concerns that moving too quickly could increase risks, Trump said maintaining the US technological lead over China was more important.
“We’re about maybe a year and a half up on China,” Trump told Fox News while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois. “We’re leading, and we’re building tremendous, trillions of dollars’ worth of places. And why should we give that up?”
Trump said he would discuss Amodei’s calls for a slower pace of AI development during the dinner.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has warned that AI could “kill us all” by the end of the decade, prompting US lawmakers to call for new rules governing the technology.
Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s alignment science lead, has echoed Coxon’s warning, saying he believes there is a more than 10 percent chance of such an event occurring within the next decade.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also called for safeguards and government involvement in an interview broadcast Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press”. Gates said AI was powerful enough to drive events that could cause a billion deaths.
Trump has previously described concerns about AI destroying humanity as a “hoax”. Gates rejected that characterization.
“It’s not a hoax at all,” Gates told NBC.
