Trump praises Iraq’s new Prime Minister, signals stronger US partnership

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump praised Iraq’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi during a meeting at the White House, describing him as a “good leader” and expressing confidence in his ability to lead the country for years to come.

The high-level meeting marked one of the first official engagements between the two leaders and highlighted Washington’s intention to strengthen political, economic and security cooperation with Baghdad.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, President Trump commended Al-Zaidi’s performance since taking office, saying the Iraqi premier had delivered impressive results in a short period.

“He has done an excellent job in a very short time,” Trump said, adding that he believes Al-Zaidi will remain in office for a long time because of his leadership and commitment to Iraq’s development.

The US president also announced plans to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. Trump said major American oil companies are expected to expand their operations in Iraq, describing the country as an important strategic partner in the Middle East.

He further reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Iraq’s security, stating that the United States would stand by Baghdad if additional security support became necessary.

“Our partnership with Iraq will continue to grow,” Trump said, emphasizing that stronger economic ties and investment would benefit both countries.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi outlined his government’s vision for Iraq, stressing that the state alone must have the authority to bear arms. He said no political party, organization or non-state group would be allowed to maintain armed wings outside the country’s official security institutions.

“The monopoly of force belongs to the state,” Al-Zaidi said, adding that only Iraq’s armed forces would be authorized to carry weapons and ensure national security.

The Iraqi premier also called for focusing on the country’s future rather than its past, saying his administration is committed to building a stable, secure and prosperous Iraq based on the rule of law and strong state institutions.

The talks also covered regional stability, economic cooperation and investment opportunities, with both leaders expressing optimism about expanding bilateral relations.

Analysts say Trump’s positive remarks reflect Washington’s desire to work closely with Iraq’s new leadership at a time when the region continues to face complex political and security challenges.
