Turkey, Qatar seek to ease Pakistan-Taliban tensions

Turkish and Qatari officials have held meetings with senior Taliban leaders in Afghanistan to discuss growing tensions between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban administration, as well as the evolving security situation in the region.

Turkey’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin, and Qatari official Hamad bin Khamis Al Kubaisi reportedly met with senior Taliban representatives during separate engagements. The officials also visited Kandahar, where they held discussions with members of the Taliban leadership.

According to international media reports, Turkey and Qatar are once again seeking to facilitate dialogue between Pakistan and the Taliban in an effort to reduce tensions and address security concerns along the two countries’ shared border.

Pakistan has repeatedly called on the Afghan Taliban authorities to take action against armed groups operating from Afghan territory. Islamabad has particularly raised concerns over militant activities that it says threaten Pakistan’s national security and stability in border regions.

The latest diplomatic contacts come amid continued concerns over cross-border militancy and strained relations between Islamabad and Kabul. Pakistan has consistently urged the Taliban administration to prevent Afghan soil from being used for attacks against Pakistan, while the Taliban has faced pressure to address regional security concerns.

Turkey and Qatar have previously engaged in diplomatic efforts concerning Afghanistan and maintained communication with various stakeholders in the region. Their renewed involvement could provide an opportunity for dialogue on border security, counterterrorism cooperation and other outstanding issues between Pakistan and the Taliban.

However, the outcome of the latest meetings and whether they will lead to concrete steps toward easing tensions remains unclear.
