Two cargo ships carrying fertiliser and wheat have arrived at Karachi Port, where both vessels were provided berthing facilities on a priority basis to ensure the timely handling of essential commodities.
According to a spokesperson for Karachi Port, the port handled a total of 101,000 tonnes of imported cargo. The shipment included 50,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser and 51,000 tonnes of wheat.
The spokesperson said cargo-handling operations for the imported wheat were also under way, with authorities prioritising the unloading of essential supplies to ensure their timely availability.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the simultaneous handling of the two vessels demonstrated the operational capacity of Karachi Port Trust (KPT).
He stressed that the timely transportation and availability of essential commodities were crucial for ensuring food security in the country. He added that increasing cargo-handling capacity at ports remained a government priority.
KPT Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed said Karachi Port continued to play a key role in the country’s international trade and supply chain.
He said efforts were under way to modernise port infrastructure and improve cargo-handling facilities to enhance operational efficiency.
The arrival of the two vessels comes as Pakistan continues to rely on maritime imports to meet its agricultural and food requirements. Efficient handling of essential cargo at major ports is important for maintaining supply chains and ensuring the uninterrupted availability of key commodities.
