The United Kingdom has secured a place among the top 10 most powerful passports in the world, according to the Global Passport Index 2026, while the United States has fallen out of the top rankings. The annual report, compiled by Global Citizen Solutions, evaluates the value and mobility of passports from 197 countries and territories based on three key factors: enhanced mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life.
Sweden retained the top position with a score of 96.5 out of 100, while Afghanistan ranked last with 72.95 points. The UK’s new blue passport secured the eighth position, a slight decline from its seventh-place ranking in 2021 and 2022, and sixth place in 2024. The report noted that post-Brexit travel challenges have left the UK weaker compared to its European counterparts, impacting its overall score.
Switzerland secured second place with 95.2 points, followed by Finland in third, Germany in fourth, and the Netherlands in fifth. Denmark ranked sixth, while Ireland, the UK, Norway, and Singapore rounded out the top 10.
