Addressing a press conference at the Press Information Department (PID), the IGP confirmed that the incident involving Air Force Group Captain Aasim occurred at 11:21 AM, and was treated as a high-priority case due to its sensitivity and public concern.

According to police findings shared during the briefing, the incident stemmed from a confrontation involving a woman and the suspect, identified as Muhammad Saad Abbasi. The suspect and a female colleague, Nimra, reportedly worked together at a store in the Melody area of Islamabad. Investigators stated that the suspect had previously met the woman on two occasions and attempted to take her out on the day of the incident, but she refused.

Police said that when the situation escalated, Group Captain Aasim intervened after witnessing the altercation. As the confrontation unfolded, the suspect allegedly returned on a motorcycle and opened fire, resulting in the officer’s death.

The IGP described the killing as a deeply troubling incident and said it was driven by what he termed “criminal intent and coercion.” He emphasized that the victim was attempting to protect the woman at the time of the shooting.

Following the incident, Islamabad Police launched a large-scale manhunt. Authorities formed 11 special investigation teams and reviewed footage from 275 Safe City cameras across the city. Advanced surveillance systems, including AI-assisted tools, were used to track the suspect’s movements.

Police officials confirmed that the suspect attempted to flee the city and had even booked a flight ticket. His mobile phone was also switched off in an effort to evade detection. However, coordinated intelligence efforts led to his arrest within nine hours of the incident.

The suspect, reportedly a resident of Abbottabad, was apprehended before he could leave Islamabad. Officials stated that all investigative teams remained in constant communication throughout the operation, ensuring a rapid and coordinated response.

Authorities praised the use of modern technology and rapid inter-agency coordination, noting that analyzing surveillance footage from a single camera can take hours, but AI-assisted systems significantly accelerated the investigation.

The IGP reiterated that the case has been solved, while further legal proceedings are underway. He also assured that strict action will be taken under the law and that the investigation will continue to ensure all aspects of the incident are fully examined.
