The Lahore Traffic Police have announced strict measures under an ongoing smog control campaign, including the suspension of driving licenses for drivers of smoke-emitting vehicles. Authorities say commercial vehicle route permits will also be revoked as part of intensified enforcement efforts.
According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi, the decision has been taken on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, as part of a broader crackdown aimed at reducing air pollution and improving public health.
The CTO stated that strict action is being taken against vehicles emitting excessive smoke, with a zero-tolerance policy now in effect across the city. He added that both driving licenses and route permits of commercial transport operators violating environmental standards will be suspended.
Authorities have also imposed a ban on the entry of uncovered dumpers, sand, and gravel transport vehicles into Lahore. Any violation of this restriction will result in legal action and registration of cases against drivers and vehicle owners.
Officials reported that during the current fiscal year, more than 114,378 challans have been issued to smoke-emitting vehicles. Additionally, 1,401 cases have been registered, while 53,599 vehicles carrying uncovered construction material have been penalized for contributing to environmental pollution.
Traffic police further stated that 188,374 unfit and dilapidated vehicles have also been targeted in enforcement actions. Special teams are conducting operations at city entry and exit points to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
The CTO added that modern technology, including an artificial intelligence-based monitoring system, is being used to identify and fine smoke-emitting vehicles more efficiently. Notifications have also been sent to multiple government and semi-government departments to ensure vehicle compliance standards are met.
Officials emphasized that strict enforcement will continue without exception, as controlling smog has become a top priority for public health and environmental protection in Lahore. The campaign will remain ongoing throughout the smog season, with further tightening of regulations expected in the coming weeks.
Authorities have urged transport operators and citizens to cooperate with the campaign to help reduce pollution levels and improve air quality in the city.
