A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officer, Group Captain Asim, was martyred after intervening to rescue a woman from an alleged abduction attempt in Islamabad, authorities said.
According to police, Group Captain Asim was travelling along Ninth Avenue when he noticed a suspicious incident involving a motorcycle rider and a woman. The officer observed that the woman appeared to be in distress, while the motorcyclist was allegedly pulling her by the hand, suggesting she was being forced against her will.
Realising that the situation required immediate action, Group Captain Asim turned his vehicle around and approached the motorcycle to assist the woman. As he stopped near the scene, the woman managed to break free and ran toward his vehicle in an apparent attempt to seek safety.
Police said that as the woman reached the officer’s car, the suspect, identified as Saad, became aggressive and exchanged heated words with Group Captain Asim. Moments later, the suspect allegedly opened fire on the Pakistan Air Force officer before fleeing the scene.
Group Captain Asim sustained critical gunshot wounds in the attack. Despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries and embraced martyrdom.
In her statement to police, the woman explained that the suspect was her colleague at work. She said he had offered to give her a ride to the office, but instead of taking the usual route, he allegedly diverted toward another location. When she objected and attempted to resist, the suspect allegedly tried to force her to continue with him.
The woman stated that Group Captain Asim noticed the struggle and courageously intervened at the right moment, allowing her to escape from the suspect. His timely action is believed to have prevented a potentially more serious crime.
Law enforcement agencies have launched a search operation to arrest the suspect, who remains at large. Police said investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to trace and apprehend the accused as soon as possible.
Group Captain Asim’s sacrifice has been widely praised, with many describing his actions as an extraordinary example of courage, selflessness, and public service. Although he was off duty at the time, he chose to risk his own life to protect a stranger in need, demonstrating the highest values of responsibility and humanity.
The fallen officer is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son. His martyrdom has left his family, colleagues, and the Pakistan Air Force in deep mourning.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed profound grief over the tragic incident. In her condolence message, she paid tribute to Group Captain Asim’s bravery and sacrifice and extended her heartfelt sympathies to his bereaved family.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across the country, with many citizens praising the officer’s heroic actions and calling for swift justice. His courage in stepping forward to protect a woman in danger has been hailed as an inspiring example of duty, compassion, and sacrifice.
Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to arrest the suspect and ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
