The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States for a three-day state visit, with U.S. President Donald Trump personally welcoming him at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

In a rare display of diplomatic ceremony, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, upon their arrival. The reception included military honours, a 21-gun salute and a flyover by U.S. Air Force B-1 bombers.

Xi’s visit is his first trip to the United States in nearly three years and comes at a time when Washington and Beijing remain divided over trade, technology, Taiwan and Iran. The visit is not expected to produce major breakthroughs, but the two sides are seeking to maintain stability in their relationship and build on the existing trade truce.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Beijing had agreed to extend what is known as the “Busan Agreement” after talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

At the arrival ceremony, Trump and Xi spoke briefly and posed for photographs as a military band played. The welcome marked the first time in 11 years that a U.S. president had personally greeted a foreign leader at Joint Base Andrews, according to U.S. media reports.

“China and the United States should be partners, not rivals,” Xi said in a written statement, according to Chinese state media.

Despite the conciliatory tone, the two countries remain at odds over several issues, including export controls, rare-earth minerals, advanced computer chips, China’s relationship with Iran and U.S. support for Taiwan.

Trade remains at the centre of the talks, including agricultural purchases and other economic commitments. The discussions are also expected to cover artificial intelligence, technology controls, regional security and global supply chains.

Both governments are expected to use the extended truce as an opportunity to negotiate longer-term arrangements and seek greater stability in their economic relationship.
