The United States has confirmed the death of another American service member in the war with Iran, bringing the Pentagon’s officially reported military death toll to 19.

The US Department of Defense confirmed the latest death as Washington continues to face scrutiny over the human cost of its military campaign against Iran. Pentagon figures have recorded both combat-related and non-combat deaths among US personnel involved in the conflict.

The latest confirmation comes after a Washington Post report earlier this month claimed that at least 22 US service members had died during the war. The newspaper reported that the actual number of American military fatalities could be higher than the figures publicly released by the Pentagon.

The US government has so far acknowledged 18 military deaths and 417 injuries linked to the conflict in its official reporting. The Pentagon’s inspector general said the reported casualties occurred during the first four months of the war.

According to the inspector general’s findings, 11 US service members died during combat operations between February 28 and June 30, 2026, while seven others lost their lives in non-combat incidents.

The report also detailed losses involving US military equipment during the same period. Iranian attacks destroyed 18 American combat aircraft and helicopters, along with 30 drones, according to the inspector general.

The differing casualty figures have raised questions over the gap between official US disclosures and independent media reporting. While the Pentagon has maintained its publicly released figures, the Washington Post cited information suggesting that the number of American military deaths may be higher.

The latest Pentagon confirmation adds to the growing toll among US forces involved in the conflict and is likely to renew attention on the scale of American military losses since the war began.
