US investigates F-35 parts shipment to Hong Kong

US authorities have launched an investigation after a shipment containing highly sensitive F-35 fighter jet components, sent from Australia to the United States, was diverted to Hong Kong.

According to international media reports, the shipment included an F-35 canopy, a critical component of the aircraft’s stealth capabilities. The canopy features a specialised radar-absorbing coating designed to reduce the aircraft’s radar signature and make it more difficult to detect.

A commercial agent handled the shipment, but it remains unclear where the components went after arriving in Hong Kong or where they are currently located.

The US Department of Defense has opened an investigation into the incident. Congressional committees dealing with national security have also begun examining the matter.

Reports indicate that US officials began briefing congressional staff on the issue in June, with further meetings expected as the investigation continues.

The F-35 Joint Program Office has confirmed the shipment-related issue. Officials are working with the companies involved to recover the components, investigate the incident and strengthen security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Australia has facilities capable of maintaining F-35 aircraft. However, none of the country’s existing centres can currently repair the aircraft’s canopies, according to reports.

The aircraft’s manufacturer declined to comment on the specific shipment. However, the company said it complies with US regulations governing the movement of aircraft components and takes necessary measures to secure every shipment.
