Houthi missile targets Riyadh as Saudi defences intercept attack

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia said its air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement toward Riyadh, as tensions between the two sides continue to escalate.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said the missile was detected and destroyed in the air before it could reach the Saudi capital. Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki said the attack was part of continued Houthi attempts to target civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The reported missile launch came early Saturday, September 19, when Saudi authorities also issued warnings over potential aerial threats in Riyadh and nearby Al-Kharj. An all-clear was later issued.

The incident was accompanied by a fire near King Khalid International Airport. Firefighters extinguished flames involving a fuel tank at a nearby depot bearing the logo of Saudi oil giant Aramco, according to AFP reporting. Verified footage showed a large column of black smoke rising above the airport area.

The Houthis claimed they had launched missiles and drones at what they described as “sensitive” sites in Riyadh. The group also said it had targeted an Aramco facility in Yanbu, a major Red Sea oil-export hub. The claims about specific targets could not be independently verified.

Saudi authorities said the attacks were not limited to the capital. According to Al-Maliki, Houthi forces also attempted to target civilians and civilian infrastructure in Bisha, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu, but Saudi air defences thwarted those attempts.

The latest confrontation marks another sharp escalation in a conflict that has already created concerns over regional security, energy infrastructure and shipping routes. Houthi attacks have increasingly focused on Saudi cities and facilities, while the group has also threatened maritime traffic in and around the Red Sea.

The developments have drawn wider international attention. The UN Security Council recently condemned continued Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, including strikes affecting civilian and energy infrastructure, while also expressing concern over the broader military escalation in Yemen.

The missile incident also comes as Saudi Arabia seeks stronger regional security cooperation. Türkiye has said it could help address Saudi Arabia’s military requirements under the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement involving Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan.

With attacks and countermeasures continuing, the latest strike has added to concerns that the Saudi-Houthi confrontation could further widen the already fragile regional conflict.
