Father who threw 3 children into canal killed in encounter

A man accused of throwing his three children into the Mangla Canal near Qazi Chak in Jhelum was killed in an alleged police encounter, police said on Sunday.

According to police, the suspect was being taken for investigation when unidentified armed men opened fire on a police vehicle on the GT Road. Police claimed that the attackers were attempting to free the detained suspect from custody.

During the exchange of fire, the suspect was allegedly injured by a bullet fired by his own accomplices, police said. He was being shifted to a hospital when he succumbed to his injuries.

Police further said that one bullet struck the bulletproof jacket of a police constable, while another hit the police vehicle. No further details about injuries to the police personnel were immediately available.

Jhelum District Police Officer said that the rule of law would be ensured at all costs. He added that those involved in attacking the police would be brought to justice.

The suspect had allegedly thrown his three children into the Mangla Canal on Tuesday night before surrendering to police. According to police, the bodies of two girls have been recovered from the canal, while a search operation is continuing for the third child.

The incident has raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death, while police maintain that he was killed during an armed attack aimed at securing his release.
