- Box office observers had suggested that an opening of around $40 million would have been a more acceptable result for a project of this scale.
The film reportedly earned around $8 million during its opening weekend after debuting in 3,321 theaters across North America. The figure could see a slight adjustment once final box office numbers are confirmed.
Industry analysts had initially predicted an opening of roughly $7.5 million. However, expectations had been considerably higher given Cruise’s global popularity and the involvement of acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu known for movies such as Birdman and The Revenant.
With an estimated production cost of between $160 million and $180 million, Digger needed a much stronger start to justify its massive investment. Box office observers had suggested that an opening of around $40 million would have been a more acceptable result for a project of this scale.
The film follows Cruise as a powerful oil tycoon whose life is thrown into turmoil by a major environmental crisis. Warner Bros. reportedly hoped that the combination of Cruise and Iñárritu could attract between $18 million and $20 million during the opening period but the movie fell well short of that target.
The weak debut has also sparked discussion in Hollywood about whether star power and enormous production budgets are enough to guarantee commercial success.
Before the release Cruise expressed his excitement about the project on X saying he was proud to be part of Digger. He also praised the cast and crew describing the filmmaking experience as both rewarding and memorable.
The film’s eventual box office performance will determine whether it can recover some of its investment through its international release and subsequent theatrical run.
