17-year-old arrested by NCCIA for allegedly attempting to poison father after seeking AI guidance

BAHAWALPUR: The Punjab chapter of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested a 17-year-old student from Bahawalpur for allegedly attempting to poison his father after seeking guidance from artificial intelligence (AI) about how to carry out the act.

According to initial information, the teenager was taken into custody following immediate action by the NCCIA Punjab on the directions of Punjab Director NCCIA Hissam Bin Iqbal. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.

The suspect, a resident of Bahawalpur, is reportedly a second-year student and the only son of his parents. Preliminary findings suggest that he had strained relations with his father and allegedly planned to harm him because of ongoing differences between them.

Investigators have also learned that the teenager had developed an interest in chemistry after watching the American crime drama series Breaking Bad. He had reportedly set up a small laboratory at his home, where he conducted various chemical experiments.

According to the information gathered during the investigation, the teenager allegedly obtained chemical substances from Australia and Islamabad and prepared a poisonous substance at home. He reportedly administered the substance to his father on one occasion, but the attempt did not produce the intended effect.

The teenager allegedly later turned to an AI system for further guidance. Investigators say he asked the AI how he could poison his father in a way that would cause his death without anyone discovering what had happened.

The case reportedly came to the attention of NCCIA Punjab through an automated alert system. Following the information, Director NCCIA Punjab Hissam Bin Iqbal directed the formation of a team to investigate the matter. The team subsequently conducted an operation in Bahawalpur and arrested the teenager.

Officials said further questioning of the suspect is underway and investigators are examining different aspects of the case, including the alleged procurement of chemical substances, their preparation and use, and the teenager’s online activity.

The incident has raised concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence by minors, particularly in cases involving harmful or criminal activities. It has also highlighted broader questions about the influence of crime-based entertainment content and the need for responsible digital engagement among young people.

The case comes amid growing discussion over the ability of AI systems to provide information that could potentially be misused if safeguards are bypassed or harmful intentions are concealed.
