HANGU: A police vehicle transporting two murder suspects came under a deadly armed attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district on Monday, leaving both detainees dead and a police constable injured, authorities said.
According to district police officials, the incident occurred in the Surozai area while the suspects were being transferred to jail after appearing before a court. Unidentified gunmen ambushed the police vehicle and opened fire, triggering a brief but intense exchange.
The two suspects, identified as Dilshad and Amanullah, were killed at the scene. Both had been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of a minor child. A police constable, Safeerur Rehman, sustained injuries during the attack and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police officials said the attackers managed to flee after the assault. Security forces quickly sealed off the area and launched a search operation to trace those responsible. The police vehicle was also damaged in the attack.
District Police Officer Tariq Habib Khan confirmed that an investigation had been initiated and directed law enforcement teams to intensify efforts to apprehend the assailants.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant violence has surged in recent years. Security agencies have conducted numerous intelligence-based operations across the province, targeting extremist networks and militant hideouts.
Despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts, several districts, including Hangu, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat and Peshawar, continue to experience frequent security threats. Authorities maintain that operations against militant groups will continue as part of broader efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
