LAHORE: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced plans to hold a major public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan on July 25, signaling its intention to strengthen its political presence in Punjab ahead of upcoming local government elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, PPP Lahore President Faisal Mir said the rally would coincide with the birthday of President Asif Ali Zardari and serve as a demonstration of the party’s growing momentum in the province. He expressed confidence that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would address the gathering.
Mir said the party was preparing to contest local government elections in all union councils across Lahore as part of a broader strategy to expand its organisational network and electoral influence in the provincial capital.
The event also marked the return of former senator Ammar Ahmed Khan and his family to the PPP. Party leaders welcomed the move, describing it as a positive step for strengthening the party’s position in Punjab.
Commenting on the political landscape, Mir criticized the ruling PML-N’s governance record in Lahore, arguing that many areas of the city still lacked essential civic facilities despite repeated claims of development. He maintained that the PPP’s increasing support in Punjab would help the party challenge its political rivals more effectively.
Addressing questions about possible restrictions on holding a rally at Minar-e-Pakistan, Mir said the party remained committed to organising the event and would move forward with its plans regardless of obstacles.
The announcement reflects the PPP’s renewed efforts to regain political ground in Punjab, a province long considered crucial to national electoral success.
