LAHORE – Major technology companies around the world have called for global action to address cybersecurity threats arising from artificial intelligence (AI).
According to a foreign news agency, more than 100 organizations including OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and its rival Anthropic have issued an open letter calling for international efforts to “strengthen cyber defenses” against AI-driven cybersecurity threats.
The letter warned that there is limited time to strengthen cyber defenses. It stated that as AI models become increasingly capable in the coming months, AI-powered cyberattacks could become much broader in scale and more sophisticated.
Concerns over the capabilities of the latest models developed by the world’s two leading AI companies, OpenAI and Anthropic have increased significantly in recent months.
In mid-July, two OpenAI models reportedly managed to gain internet access outside their restricted testing environments. They searched for and attacked Hugging Face, a platform used by AI developers to store and share code.
Later, it was also revealed that during testing designed to keep AI models isolated from real-world systems, models developed by Anthropic gained unauthorized access to the systems of three unidentified organizations.
The open letter published on Thursday called for a collective response including recognition that existing cybersecurity measures are insufficient and that AI-powered tools themselves are needed to defend against emerging threats.
The letter also called on governments to coordinate cyber defense efforts at the local, national and international levels including through intelligence sharing and funding for various initiatives.
It further stated that companies developing the most powerful generative AI models should improve their testing processes while providing responsible access to their models, significant funding, training and practical support.
However, the letter did not propose any specific funding amount or financial commitments for these objectives.
