Balochistan imposes Section 144 for 30 days

The Balochistan government has imposed Section 144 across the province for 30 days, placing restrictions on public gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and the display of weapons.

The order came into effect on September 23 and was issued in view of security concerns and reports of activities that could affect public peace, law and order and the safety of citizens.

Under the new restrictions, gatherings of five or more people at public places have been prohibited. The ban also covers sit-ins, processions, rallies, demonstrations and other similar activities.

The provincial government has also prohibited the display, carrying, possession and use of weapons in public places unless specifically permitted under the law.

The order further restricts people from concealing or covering their faces in public places. The restriction includes the use of mufflers, masks or other coverings that prevent or obstruct identification.

All law-enforcement agencies and district administrations have been directed to strictly enforce the restrictions across the province. Authorities have been instructed to take action against anyone found violating the order under the relevant provisions of the law.

The order was issued by Balochistan Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.

Adviser to the Balochistan Home Department Babar Yousafzai said the restrictions were introduced to protect the lives and property of citizens and maintain peace across the province. He said Section 144 would remain in force for 30 days with immediate effect.

The latest restrictions come as security activity has increased in several parts of Balochistan. Security forces recently conducted intelligence-based operations in Quetta, Kech and other areas, in which several militants were killed, according to officials.

Authorities also reported an encounter in Mastung, where security forces killed militants following an alleged attack on a security checkpost. Another operation was conducted in Turbat.

This is the third province-wide imposition of Section 144 in Balochistan this year. Similar restrictions were introduced in May for security reasons, while another province-wide order was imposed during Muharram as part of special security arrangements.
