ISLAMABAD: Representatives of women-led business organizations from across Pakistan have urged the federal government to introduce policies that encourage greater female participation in economic activities, arguing that empowering women entrepreneurs and workers can significantly contribute to economic growth and help address the country’s fiscal challenges.
The demand was made during a meeting chaired by Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani at the Finance Division on Sunday. The session brought together representatives from nearly 40 women chambers of commerce and industry, who discussed a range of proposals related to the upcoming federal budget, entrepreneurship, and women’s role in the national economy.
According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, participants shared their experiences and highlighted the barriers that continue to limit women’s participation in business and economic decision-making. They also presented recommendations aimed at creating a more inclusive economic environment for women across the country.
The representatives stressed the need for expanded skill development programs, improved access to Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and greater support for women-led businesses. They also called for enhanced opportunities in human resource development initiatives and stronger representation of women in policymaking forums.
Business leaders emphasized that increasing women’s participation in the workforce is not only a matter of social inclusion but also an economic necessity. They noted that a larger and more active female workforce could help boost productivity, stimulate entrepreneurship, and contribute to sustainable economic growth at a time when Pakistan is seeking to strengthen its financial position.
The meeting comes as the government finalizes preparations for the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27, which is scheduled to be presented on June 10. The budget is being prepared amid ongoing economic reforms and under the framework of Pakistan’s $7 billion program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
During the discussion, Kayani acknowledged the growing contribution of women entrepreneurs to various sectors of the economy and praised their role in creating employment opportunities and driving innovation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding economic opportunities for women and ensuring their greater participation in national development.
The minister assured the participants that their proposals and concerns would be carefully reviewed during the budget formulation process. He also expressed support for initiatives aimed at strengthening women-owned enterprises and pledged continued cooperation from the Finance Ministry in addressing issues faced by female entrepreneurs.
Stakeholders at the meeting expressed hope that the upcoming budget would include practical measures to reduce barriers for women in business, improve access to finance, and create a more supportive environment for female-led enterprises.
