King Charles III and other members of the British royal family should not take a reported apology from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seriously, a commentator has said, questioning the couple’s alleged motives.
James Walker, an associate editor at Britain’s Daily Express newspaper, discussed reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were considering apologising to the royal family during an episode of the Daily Expresso podcast hosted by JJ Anisiobi.
“To be honest, I don’t know how much to believe it. I believe the story, I believe they’re going to apologise, but if I were Wills and Catherine, Charles and Camilla, I wouldn’t be taking that apology remotely seriously,” Walker said.
Walker suggested the couple could be motivated by financial considerations, claiming they “just want money back” in their bank accounts.
“They want their lives to be easy,” he said, adding that he believed the couple felt “a bit useless and redundant”.
Walker argued that a private apology would not be enough, suggesting the royal family might expect a more public gesture.
Anisiobi said any apology would need to be public, but questioned whether it would win over Britons who had been hurt by allegations made against the royal family.
“The British public, some of whom were very hurt by accusations against the royal family, they’re not going to forgive Harry and Meghan,” he said.
Anisiobi added that critics of the couple might view an apology as a means of regaining the benefits they enjoyed while working members of the royal family.
The reported apology plans have not been confirmed by the couple. A report published by People on October 8, citing a source close to the Sussexes, said they were not planning to apologise to Prince William and Catherine.
