KARACHI: A judicial magistrate’s court in Karachi South has granted a three-day physical remand of two suspects arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a young man in Defence.
The suspects, identified as Waqar and Ibrahim, were produced before the court during the hearing of the case. Police sought their physical remand for further investigation, which the court subsequently approved.
During the proceedings, the suspects’ lawyer claimed that the video of the incident circulating on social media had been generated using artificial intelligence. The defence further alleged that the victim was being pressured into filing the case and requested the court to order a forensic examination of the video to determine its authenticity.
The victim, identified as Ali Jafri, told the court that he had gone to Defence Phase 6 with his friends to have a meal. He said that when he came out after eating, someone struck him on the head with a stick, causing him to lose consciousness.
According to Jafri, the suspects then put him into a car and took him away, where he was allegedly subjected to violence. He claimed that one of the suspects stood nearby pointing a pistol at him while the others repeatedly demanded that he apologise.
The victim further alleged that the suspects demanded money from him and used his account to make purchases.
Police told the court that the incident had taken place on August 29. According to investigators, the victim had earlier been involved in a dispute at a gaming zone within the jurisdiction of Gizri Police Station.
Police have arrested the alleged main suspect, Malik Ibrahim, in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at Sahil Police Station.
A video of the alleged assault went viral on social media, purportedly showing three young men physically assaulting the victim. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the defence has questioned the authenticity of the video and sought its forensic examination.
