Speaking to CCTV on Wednesday, Musk credited Xi’s leadership with what he described as China’s immense progress, pointing to developments in infrastructure, new buildings and technology.

“He seems like a great leader. Under his tenure, China has prospered immensely,” Musk said.

“It’s also obvious to see, just walking around the streets, the increased prosperity of the average Chinese citizen,” he added. “All that seems to happen under President Xi while he’s been the leader of China. So he’s clearly done an excellent job and is very capable.”

Musk also encouraged people to visit China, highlighting his experience travelling by high-speed train from Beijing to Xi’an.

“I generally recommend people go to China as much as they can, because China has so many things to see,” he said. “I took the bullet train from Beijing to Xi’an. That was a great experience. The train stations are amazing.”

The Tesla CEO also praised the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, describing them as one of the wonders of the world and urging visitors to pay attention to the scenery rather than spend the journey on their phones.

“Any words I say do not do justice to the incredible majesty that is China. It’s awesome,” Musk said.

Musk also praised Tesla’s largest manufacturing hub in Shanghai, describing the local team as “incredibly talented, hardworking and trustworthy.” He called the Shanghai factory “a gem” and “beautiful.”

The interview came a day before Xi is due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday, September 24, for their second summit of the year. Musk is also expected to join other prominent U.S. business and technology executives at a White House state dinner hosted by Trump for Xi.

The dinner is expected to bring together several prominent technology executives, including Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and other U.S. business leaders, as Washington and Beijing seek to manage tensions over trade, technology and artificial intelligence.
