ISLAMABAD/PESHAWAR: The federal government has established an 11-member monitoring committee to oversee governance, security and administrative affairs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of Governor’s Rule, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has chaired the inaugural meeting of a Regional Development Secretariat for 12 southern and merged districts of the province.
The two initiatives aim to strengthen administrative coordination, address security challenges and accelerate development activities in areas affected by lawlessness and stalled projects.
According to a notification issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar will head the monitoring committee as its convener. The body will review provincial administration, law and order, security arrangements, development projects, financial management and the implementation of federal decisions.
The committee will also facilitate coordination between civilian and military institutions. Its membership includes Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, Law Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, SAFRON Minister Engineer Amir Muqam, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and MQM-Pakistan Convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui.
Representatives of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Balochistan Awami Party and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party will also be included, while a secretary will be appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office. Sources told Minute Mirror that the committee would hold weekly meetings, submit reports to the prime minister and brief the federal cabinet on its findings.
Meanwhile, the Regional Development Secretariat for 12 districts held its first formal meeting in Peshawar under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi. The meeting was attended by the Peshawar Corps Commander, the provincial Additional Chief Secretary, the Inspector General of Police and senior officials from civil administration, intelligence agencies and the Frontier Corps.
Participants reviewed the security situation in Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan, along with the seven merged tribal districts: Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, North Waziristan and South Waziristan.
The discussions also covered stalled development schemes, public concerns regarding healthcare, education and infrastructure, and security threats posed by militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
According to the official handout, decisions included releasing funds for peace and development initiatives, establishing joint civil-military monitoring cells at divisional level, accelerating projects under the Accelerated Implementation Programme for merged districts and improving coordination among police, the Counter Terrorism Department and security forces.
Naqvi stressed that peace and development must progress together, directing officials to prioritise public safety and effective implementation of development projects.
The developments follow the transfer and posting of eight senior Police Service of Pakistan officers on October 12, 2026, under Notification No. CPO/E-I/Transfer/Posting/2414, including changes involving senior police officials in Bannu and the provincial Counter Terrorism Department.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has also approved an 11-member advisory council to assist in provincial affairs.
Together, the initiatives establish separate mechanisms for federal-level policy oversight and district-level coordination. Their implementation will be closely watched as authorities seek to improve security, address public grievances and accelerate development across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
