G7 urges Iran to stop supporting Houthis

G7 foreign ministers have called on Iran to end its arming and support for the Houthis in Yemen, warning that the group’s continued attacks could further disrupt international trade and contribute to global instability.

The foreign ministers of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States issued the call in a joint statement following a meeting held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The ministers strongly condemned what they described as the Houthis’ continued strikes in Yemen and attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. They said the group’s actions represented a dangerous pattern of escalation with wider consequences for regional security and international commerce.

The G7 ministers urged the Houthis to immediately halt all military operations, threats and attacks against civilian shipping. They also called on the group to return to the political process and engage in negotiations in good faith.

The statement comes amid continuing concerns over attacks linked to the conflict in the region and their impact on commercial shipping routes. The G7 stressed the need to protect civilian vessels and maintain the security of international trade routes.

The ministers also called for an end to actions that could further escalate tensions and undermine efforts toward a political resolution of the conflict in Yemen.
