Heavy rain forecast for Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in Rawalpindi, prompting local authorities to step up preparations and monitoring across the city.

According to the weather department, the city is experiencing cloudy conditions, with the possibility of heavy to intense rainfall in the coming hours.

The forecast has prompted the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to increase its preparedness, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to water accumulation and urban flooding.

WASA officials said additional teams have been deployed in low-lying areas to respond quickly to any emergency caused by heavy rainfall.

Special arrangements have also been made around Nullah Lai, one of the city’s major waterways. Personnel from Rescue 1122, WASA and Civil Defence have been deployed along the drain as a precautionary measure.

Officials are closely monitoring water levels in Nullah Lai and other drains across Rawalpindi. The monitoring is aimed at identifying any sudden rise in water levels and enabling authorities to respond promptly.

WASA teams are also keeping a watch on drainage channels and vulnerable locations to prevent rainwater from causing major disruption to residents.

In view of the expected weather conditions, authorities have cancelled staff holidays. Additional personnel will remain available to deal with any emergency situation.

The relevant departments have been directed to remain alert and maintain coordination during the period of heavy rainfall.

Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious as authorities continue to monitor the situation and prepare for possible urban flooding.

The precautionary measures are intended to minimise the impact of heavy rainfall and ensure a timely response if water levels rise in Nullah Lai or other drains.
