Hyderabad’s Niaz stadium badminton and tennis halls remain abandoned for 14 years

The badminton and tennis facilities at Hyderabad’s Niaz Stadium have remained largely abandoned for the past 14 years leaving local athletes without access to a major sports venue.

The halls have deteriorated significantly with stands windows and doors damaged and the overall building falling into a state of disrepair. The badminton court’s walls and floor have also suffered extensive damage making the facility unsuitable for players.

The badminton hall was constructed within the Niaz Stadium complex in 1993 to provide facilities for badminton and tennis players in Hyderabad. According to official records the project cost approximately Rs1.9 million.

The facility once featured two badminton courts that hosted provincial and national-level tournaments. Players from Hyderabad and other parts of Sindh regularly used the venue to compete and showcase their talent.

However, the facility fell into neglect after the last Sindh Games were held there in 2012. Since then signs of deterioration have become increasingly visible throughout the badminton hall and tennis facilities.

Hyderabad Deputy Commissioner Zain-ul-Abideen Memon said a proposal had previously been submitted to the Sindh government for the rehabilitation and modernization of the building but the required approval and funding could not be secured.

The district administration has now said efforts are underway to restore the badminton hall and tennis court through a public-private partnership (PPP).

Local residents and athletes have called for urgent action by both the district administration and the provincial sports department. They said restoring the facilities would provide young athletes with a much-needed venue to train and compete.

The proposed rehabilitation could help revive an important sports facility in Hyderabad and give a new generation of badminton and tennis players an opportunity to develop their skills.
