K-pop star Lisa has opened up about the year she spent exploring life outside Blackpink, saying the break allowed her to experiment with new projects, spend more time with family and discover different sides of herself.
The 29-year-old singer, whose full name is Lalisa Manobal, discussed the experience while attending the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of her new documentary, Always Lalisa. The film follows a year in her life when she stepped away from group activities and pursued solo opportunities.
Lisa said she felt the year was enough time to try new things, although the period was busy. She also valued the opportunity to spend more time with her family, particularly while filming the latest season of The White Lotus in Thailand.
Her journey in the K-pop industry began at a young age. Lisa auditioned for YG Entertainment when she was 13 and moved from Thailand to South Korea a year later to begin her training. She spent five years preparing before making her debut with Blackpink.
Moving to another country alone as a teenager was challenging, but Lisa said having her Blackpink bandmates around helped her adjust. She described the members as a family and said their bond grew stronger during those early years.
During her time away from the group, Lisa also wanted to explore areas of music that she had not previously focused on. She explained that she had mainly performed as a rapper with Blackpink but had always wanted to develop her singing.
Her solo album Alter Ego reflects different sides of her personality through five characters. Lisa said those personas have continued to grow with her as she has gained new experiences.
The singer also spoke about finding a healthier balance between her career and personal life. She said that as she has become more mature, she has learned to enjoy her life while maintaining a balance between work and personal time.
Lisa said she was able to discuss personal and sensitive subjects in the documentary because director Sue Kim created an environment in which she felt comfortable opening up.
She has since reunited with Blackpink and said the members returned with greater confidence after pursuing individual projects. According to Lisa, the group members remained closely connected during their break through calls, messages and meetings.
The documentary also features Lisa’s family and childhood memories. She credited her mother and stepfather for supporting her decision to move abroad at a young age and pursue her dream.
Lisa also remembered her late grandfather and dance teacher, whom she considers important figures in her life. Before performances, she said she imagines inviting them to watch her from above.
