Mohmand operation, killed militant identified as Afghan national, security sources say

Security sources have confirmed that one of the militants killed during a recent operation in Mohmand District was a foreign Afghan national, as new details continue to emerge about the intelligence-based action carried out in the Sheikh Banda area.

According to officials, the operation was conducted on June 4, during which security forces targeted militant hideouts and engaged in a brief but intense exchange of fire. Two suspected militants were killed in the action, which was described as part of ongoing efforts to clear the region of armed networks operating near the Pakistan–Afghanistan border.

Security sources now say that one of the deceased individuals has been identified through documents recovered at the scene as an Afghan citizen. The identification was reportedly confirmed using an Afghan national identity card found among his belongings.

Officials stated that the recovered identity card listed the name as Umar Bilal, a resident of Afghanistan’s Khost province. Khost Province lies close to the border region and has frequently been mentioned in regional security assessments related to cross-border movement of armed groups.

During the search operation, security personnel also recovered a range of items, including foreign currency, modern weaponry, and a suicide vest. Authorities believe the recovered materials indicate that the group was equipped for high-risk militant activity in the area.

Security sources further claimed that preliminary findings suggest external facilitation and training support for elements operating in the region. However, they emphasized that investigations are ongoing to determine the full network and possible support structures behind the group.

The operation in Sheikh Banda is part of broader counterterrorism efforts in the border regions, where security forces have intensified intelligence-based missions in recent months to dismantle militant hideouts and prevent cross-border infiltration.

Officials reiterated that such operations are aimed at ensuring long-term stability in sensitive border districts, which have historically experienced security challenges due to their geographical proximity to Afghanistan.

Further verification and forensic analysis are underway to confirm additional details about the identity and affiliations of the deceased individuals. Security agencies have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests or follow-up operations based on intelligence gathered during the raid.
