Nur-ul-Ain Qureshi takes charge as Gujrat’s first woman DC

GUJRAT: In what’s being seen as a bold and symbolic move, the Punjab government has appointed Nur-ul-Ain Qureshi (PAS/BS-18) as Deputy Commissioner Gujrat, making her the first-ever woman to hold the district’s top administrative post.

According to an official notification issued on 18th July 2025 by the S&GAD, Nur-ul-Ain has been transferred from the Finance Department and posted in Gujrat under Section 9 of the PCS Act, 1974. She takes over from DC Gujranwala Naveed Ahmad, who was holding additional charge of Gujrat.

A senior officer in Lahore called it “not just a routine posting, it’s a reset for Gujrat.”

Nur-ul-Ain is no newcomer to the district. She earlier served as Assistant Commissioner, Gujrat during 2015-16, where she was known for her field presence, clean record, and prompt response to local disputes. Insiders from revenue offices say she used to “visit patwar circles unannounced and never tolerated delays.”

“She doesn’t run the district from AC rooms. She’s always in the field,” a former subordinate told Minute Mirror.
Locals and political observers say Gujrat, often dominated by legacy politics and bureaucratic inertia, might now see a shift in tone and action. The district has long been criticized for slow progress on infrastructure projects, increasing urban encroachments, and unchecked administrative lapses.

Her appointment is also notable due to her administrative background; her husband, Kamran Mumtaz, has served as DPO in several Punjab districts, making them one of the province’s most experienced civil service couples. Officials at the Commissioner’s Office believe that with her prior knowledge of the area and strict field style, she might shake the system awake.

“Gujrat is entering a new phase, a woman officer who knows the game and doesn’t play around,” said a senior Lahore-based bureaucrats. For a district often stuck in the status quo, this could mark the beginning of something new.
