LONDON/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed concern over remarks made by several British Members of Parliament and some UK-based Kashmiri activists concerning recent developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), stressing that issues relating to the region should be viewed within their constitutional, legal and historical context.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan rejected what it described as “unwarranted and ill-informed” observations regarding the situation in AJK and emphasized that comments by a small number of individuals and lawmakers did not adequately reflect the constitutional realities and democratic framework governing the region.
The Foreign Office noted that Pakistan remains committed to democratic principles, the rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. It reiterated that the Government of Pakistan and the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir fully respect the constitutional rights of citizens and remain committed to addressing public concerns through democratic and institutional mechanisms.
Responding to comments made by some British parliamentarians, the ministry underscored that Pakistan is a sovereign and democratic state that adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and expects the same respect from its international partners.
The statement also drew a distinction between peaceful democratic engagement and actions that undermine public order. While reaffirming support for lawful political activity, it stressed that violence, vandalism, attacks on public institutions, disruption of essential services and harm to law enforcement personnel cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Pakistan further called for respect for democratic institutions, judicial decisions and constitutional processes, urging all stakeholders to engage constructively and responsibly. The Foreign Office also encouraged individuals residing overseas to contribute positively to public discourse and to support peaceful and lawful means of civic engagement.
The response comes amid recent debate within sections of the overseas Kashmiri community and following interventions by a number of British MPs regarding political developments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials maintained that Pakistan remains committed to safeguarding democratic freedoms while preserving constitutional order, public stability and the rule of law. The Foreign Office reaffirmed that issues concerning Azad Jammu and Kashmir should be addressed through established legal and democratic channels and in accordance with the region’s constitutional framework.
Observers say the statement reflects Islamabad’s determination to defend its position on Azad Jammu and Kashmir while continuing to engage with international partners through diplomatic channels.
