The Punjab government has formally requested the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel to strengthen security arrangements across the province during Muharram, as authorities prepare to manage thousands of religious gatherings and processions expected during the sacred month.

According to officials from the Punjab Home Department, a total of 137 companies comprising Army and Rangers personnel have been requested to assist civil law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and ensuring public safety in 39 districts of the province.

A spokesperson for the department said that a formal request has been forwarded to the Ministry of Interior, seeking the deployment of 61 companies of the Pakistan Army and 76 companies of the Pakistan Rangers for Muharram security duties.

The requested forces are expected to remain on duty from 1st Muharram to 11th Muharram, a period during which security concerns typically increase due to the large number of religious congregations, processions, and public events held across Punjab.

Officials said the deployment plan has been designed according to the specific security requirements of each district. The additional personnel will support local police and other law enforcement agencies in crowd management, surveillance, route security, and emergency response operations.

The Punjab Home Department emphasized that comprehensive security measures are being finalized to ensure the peaceful observance of Muharram. Authorities are also reviewing contingency plans and coordinating with intelligence and security agencies to address any potential threats.

The spokesperson noted that the request for military and Rangers assistance was submitted following recommendations from the Punjab Police, which highlighted the need for additional manpower to effectively secure sensitive areas and major religious events across the province.

Every year, provincial governments enhance security arrangements during Muharram due to the significant influx of participants in religious activities. Special monitoring, deployment of security personnel, installation of surveillance systems, and strict implementation of security protocols are among the measures commonly adopted to maintain law and order.
