LAHORE: The Punjab government has requested the federal government to downgrade mobile phone and internet services in parts of the province from September 27 in view of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) proposed long march.

The Punjab Home Department has written a letter to the federal government seeking restrictions on telecommunications services in specific areas.

According to sources, the request includes the suspension of mobile phone and internet services in selected areas of Attock and Rawalpindi districts. The provincial government has also sought measures to weaken mobile signals in areas where the PTI march is expected to take place.

The request has been made in anticipation of possible law and order challenges associated with the planned political activity. The Home Department referred to a letter sent by the Central Police Office (CPO) Punjab in its communication to the federal government.

Sources within the Home Department said a request had also been made for internet jamming at specific locations in Rawalpindi. The areas mentioned in the request include Brahma, Bahter, Taxila, Wah Saddar and Chakri.

The proposed restrictions are linked to security arrangements for September 27. Authorities are assessing measures they believe may be required to maintain public order during the expected political gathering and movement.
