Punjab seeks troops ahead of PTI march

LAHORE: The Punjab government has approached the federal government for the deployment of the army and Rangers in several districts ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s possible long march on September 27.

According to sources, the Punjab Home Department has requested the deployment of Rangers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali to help maintain law and order amid concerns over possible protests and political gatherings.

The provincial government has also sought the deployment of army personnel in Rawalpindi. The requested deployment of both the army and Rangers would continue until October 5, according to the letter sent to the federal government.

Sources said the Punjab government made the request as part of security arrangements to prevent any disruption to public order during the expected political activity. The issue also came under discussion at a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice.

The security measures come as authorities prepare for possible demonstrations linked to the PTI’s September 27 protest call. Officials have been assessing security requirements in sensitive areas, particularly Rawalpindi and other districts that could witness increased political activity.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad Police has requested additional personnel from Punjab and Sindh to strengthen security arrangements in the federal capital.

Police sources said Islamabad Police has sought 16,000 personnel from Punjab Police and another 2,000 from Sindh Police, bringing the total requirement to 18,000 additional personnel.

The Islamabad Police has also requested senior officers from both provinces, including three deputy inspectors general (DIGs), seven senior superintendents of police (SSPs) and 18 superintendents of police (SPs).

Authorities are expected to deploy the additional personnel at key locations and sensitive areas to manage potential crowds, maintain traffic and ensure security during the period surrounding the planned political activity.
