MUMBAI: Indian actress and singer Shruti Haasan has opened up about her views on marriage after turning 40, saying that she fears losing her independence if she enters into a legally binding relationship.

Speaking on a podcast, Shruti discussed her reservations about marriage and the idea of linking her personal identity to a legal institution. She explained that although she holds traditional views about certain aspects of life, her hesitation about marriage is based on her own thinking rather than pressure from anyone around her.

“I am very traditional about some things and, in other matters, conservative in my way of thinking,” the actress said while explaining her perspective. She added that these views are not the result of social or family pressure but reflect her personal beliefs and choices.

Shruti said that the formalities associated with marriage, including legal paperwork, substantial expenses and the emphasis on elaborate celebrations, make the idea less appealing to her. She said she would prefer a relationship in which two people continue to choose each other voluntarily rather than feeling that their commitment is defined by a legal document.

The actress suggested that she values personal freedom and believes that a relationship should be based on mutual choice, understanding and commitment. According to her, she would rather have a partner who chooses to remain with her every day because of their relationship rather than because they are legally bound to one another.

Shruti also revealed that she had previously come close to getting married and, at that stage of her life, the idea of marriage did not appear as frightening to her. However, she said that the financial burden associated with weddings continues to concern her.

Reflecting on the expenses involved in marriage ceremonies, Shruti jokingly questioned the need to spend a large amount of money on a wedding. She suggested that such money could instead be donated to people or causes that need financial support.

Her comments highlight a personal approach to relationships in which emotional commitment and individual autonomy take precedence over conventional expectations surrounding marriage. While she acknowledged that some of her views may appear traditional, the actress made it clear that she does not want to enter into marriage simply because it is considered a social norm.

Shruti Haasan, who has worked across Indian cinema as an actress and singer, has previously been in a relationship with artist Santanu Hazarika. The two were reportedly together for around four years before their relationship ended in 2024 due to personal differences.

Since then, Shruti has largely maintained a private approach to her personal life. Her latest remarks have once again drawn attention to her perspective on relationships, independence and the institution of marriage.

The actress’s comments also reflect a broader discussion around changing attitudes towards marriage, particularly among individuals who prefer to define long-term relationships according to personal choices rather than traditional social expectations.
