Spider-Man director Jon Watts joins new Star Wars trilogy

Jon Watts, the filmmaker behind Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, is set to direct the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy.

The upcoming project is being written by filmmaker Simon Kinberg, who will also serve as a producer. The new trilogy is part of Lucasfilm’s broader plans to expand the Star Wars film franchise following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga.

Watts is no stranger to the Star Wars universe. He previously worked on the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which he created alongside Christopher Ford. The coming-of-age series follows a group of children who become involved in an adventure across the galaxy and features Jude Law.

The director gained worldwide recognition for helming Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The three films starred Tom Holland as the Marvel superhero and became a major part of the character’s modern cinematic run.

Kinberg also has a long history with major franchise projects. He has worked extensively on the X-Men series, including producing several films and directing Dark Phoenix in 2019.

His connection with Star Wars goes back to The Force Awakens. Kinberg served as a consultant on J.J. Abrams’ 2015 film and also co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni.

Reports suggest the new trilogy could continue the Skywalker Saga. However, details about its story remain unclear. There have also been conflicting reports over whether Daisy Ridley’s Rey could return from the sequel trilogy or whether the new films will introduce an entirely different storyline.

The project is expected to become part of Lucasfilm’s next phase of Star Wars movies. However, no release date has been announced so far.

Lucasfilm has yet to publicly provide detailed information about Watts’ involvement or reveal further details about the planned trilogy.
