Essex cricketer Robin Das charged with two rape offences

LONDON: Essex County Cricket Club batter Robin Das has been charged with two counts of rape in connection with allegations dating back to March 2024, according to London’s Metropolitan Police.

Police said Das, 24, was charged on July 23, 2026, and is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on October 9.

The investigation began after police received a report in March 2024 concerning an alleged rape in Brixton, south London. Das was subsequently arrested in August 2025 as part of the investigation.

The charges announced this year relate to the same investigation. Under UK law, a person charged with an offence is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The Metropolitan Police said the woman involved in the case continues to receive support from specially trained officers. Police have not publicly disclosed further details about the allegations, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.

Essex Suspends Batter

Das plays for Essex County Cricket Club as a top-order batter. Following the legal case, Essex suspended him while the proceedings are dealt with through the courts.

The county club has said it will not comment further while the legal process is ongoing.

The suspension means Das’s cricket career is currently on hold as he prepares to face the court proceedings. The case is separate from his sporting record and will now be determined through the criminal justice process.

Das made his first-class debut for Essex in 2020 and has since established himself as part of the county side. He has played around 60 first-class matches during his career, representing Essex across domestic competitions.

The batter has also featured in limited-overs cricket and has been regarded as one of the county club’s top-order options.

Court Proceedings Ahead

The next significant development in the case is expected on October 9, when Das is scheduled to appear before Inner London Crown Court.

The charges concern two alleged offences against a woman. Details of the evidence and the circumstances surrounding the allegations are expected to be addressed through the court process.
